Synopsis:
Lies of the Wicked drops us into a world where elemental soldiers, celestial witches, and botanical witches rule the scene. Thessa, an orphan, is just trying to make it to her 18th birthday when her magic will finally manifest. But, surprise! Her magic isn’t like everyone else’s. Instead of elemental or botanical magic, she’s rocking shadow magic—which is, y’know, illegal. Casual. Thessa’s thrown into a rebellion against the government and finds not just a hidden strength in herself, but also a swoon-worthy love interest in Soren, a fellow shadow magic wielder.

My Review:
If you’re looking for a fast-paced, romantasy read that doesn’t require a whole lot of brainpower (in the best way), Lies of the Wicked might be your next book binge. Thessa is a lovable lead, and I appreciated learning about the magic system alongside her. And let’s not forget about Soren—he’s got the shadow daddy vibes locked down, and I was absolutely here for it.

One thing that really stood out to me was how well B.L. Lewis captured Thessa’s struggle with anxiety. As someone who deals with anxiety too, I felt her moments of self-doubt and fear, and it made her incredibly relatable. It was refreshing to see that kind of mental health representation in a romantasy book. Thessa’s journey toward embracing her shadow magic felt like a metaphor for finding strength despite her struggles, which added so much depth to her character.

That said, since this is a standalone, you don’t get as much time for the character development you’d see in a longer series. On the one hand, it leaves you wanting more depth, but on the other, it’s a quick and satisfying read that’s perfect for when you need a palette cleanser or just a break from heavy, intricate world-building.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and B.L. Lewis’s writing. It’s fun, easy to digest, and packed with morally grey goodness. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from Lewis in the future!

What do you think? Will you be adding this indie treasure to your TBR? I hope so!

Until next time ✌🏻

Marie
